Truth and Reconciliation Closing Events in Ottawa

We are calling for a participant who would like to attend the Truth and Reconciliation Closing Events in Ottawa from May 29- June 3, 2015. If you are interested in attending, CUPE 4207 would like to support you!

For more than 120 years, tens of thousands of Aboriginal children were sent to Indian Residential Schools funded by the federal government and run by the churches. They were taken from their families and communities in order to be stripped of language, cultural identity and traditions. Canada’s attempt to wipe out Aboriginal cultures failed. But it left an urgent need for reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) is holding its Closing Event in Ottawa from May 31 to June 3, 2015 to involve people in the process of healing and reconciliation. For more information about the events happening at this gathering please go to This is a four day free event, open to the public (May 31- June 3).

If you would like to attend the pre-TRC workshop, CUPE 4207 will pay your registration fee ($120). The pre-workshop’s aim is to support KAIROS in increasing its Indigenous rights education and relationship building initiatives across the country to help prepare Canadians for the TRC’s final report and to lay the foundation for follow-up work. More information can be found here There is billeting available in Ottawa as well as bus transportation to and from Toronto.

This opportunity is open to all CUPE 4207 members with priority of supporting Aboriginal Peoples. Simply email us at CUPE at and Jodielynn at to let us know you would like to go! The deadline for selection is Friday, May 22 at 12:00pm. CUPE will fund one participant.

Our hope is that when you return from this important gathering you will share your experience with other union members. This can be done in multiple ways such as photos, powerpoint, art, participate in an upcoming TRC educational at Brock, oral or written report. The method of sharing is open! We just want to keep the learning and knowledge flowing!
