War on Women

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

RALLY in  Toronto on SATURDAY, March 9th

Synopsis Feminism has shaped the society we live in. But just how far has it brought us, and how relevant is it today? Status Quo? zeroes in on key concerns such as violence against women, access to abortion, and universal childcare, asking how much progress we have truly made on these issues. It uncovers answers that are provocative and at times shocking.
Rich with archival material and startling contemporary stories, Status Quo? is crucial viewing for every Canadian, especially those unfamiliar with the vital achievements of the feminist movement. This striking, in-depth documentary pays homage to Canada’s feminist forerunners and raises important questions about where and how we should move on from here.
Length of film: 87 minutes

Show opposition to Motion 312 on  Wednesday, April 25, Parliament Hill, Ottawa.  The Local will send a contingent to this demonstration. Contact 4207 Equity Officer Dave Welsh to arrange for the trip.

Excerpt from a petition (link below) about Motion 312: “If successful, the motion would convene a special Parliamentary committee made up mostly of Conservative MPs to review the definition of “human being” in Subsection 223(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada, which states that “A child becomes a human being … when it has completely proceeded, in a living state, from the body of its mother.” The motion is an attempt to extend legal rights and personhood to fetuses, which is why Canadian women have nicknamed the bill “Women Can’t Be Trusted.” The motion is scheduled for one hour of debate in Parliament on April 26, with another hour of debate and a vote in late spring or early fall.’
